Hopefully no one will find themselves in this situation, and sometimes you just can't find a reason for the plucking, but there are definitely things to try :)Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06645791926538907697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7070053671376569995.post-72448988355779515332008-06-04T19:36:00.000-07:002008-06-04T19:36:00.000-07:00This is a really great information with all the mo...This is a really great information with all the most helpful points in one post with links to the best information. I may write something about this in the future (and probably link to your blog since you've written so much good stuff about it) but I think that also plays a large role. I know parrots that have been killed from air fresheners in the house and with their sensitive respiratory systems, it stands to reason that the chemicals that affect you would affect her as well. I read a National Geographic article a year or so ago that just shocked me as to how many chemicals we have in our systems. I, too, am worried about the long-term effects.

Jazzy is lucky to have such a conscientious owner!Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06645791926538907697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7070053671376569995.post-14483264177729328282008-06-04T13:43:00.000-07:002008-06-04T13:43:00.000-07:00We're having a problem with Jazzy scratching. When my breathing worsens I notice Jazzy scratches more, with the result that she's bare around her neck and spreading whenever the air quality is worse.

We do almost everything you mentioned in your list and it's not at all dry in our house, we monitor it with a humidity meter.

Her scratching stops when the air quality is good and she recovers her feathers quickly. Unfortunately the air quality is gradually worsening around us as people use more and more concentrated products. We take as many precautions as we can to make the air in the apartment the best possible. I also take her out on walks with me at least 4 times a week. She has improved since we increased how often she gets out of the apartment into better air, where she hardly ever scratches. If someone comes up to her travel cage to greet her and is wearing perfume Jazzy starts to scratch again.

We aren't able to move and it pains us greatly to not be able to do better for her. I worry about her long-term health, though for now she plays, is highly intelligent and appears very happy. I wonder how many other parrots have a hard time with human house chemicals.DweezelJazzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05102237878838519049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7070053671376569995.post-56486041954955367432008-06-04T09:25:00.000-07:002008-06-04T09:25:00.000-07:00When I started reading this post I was really hopi...When I started reading this post I was really hoping you were going to say "humidity". Of all the feather plucking theories out there I think it is the one that makes sense - after all think of the humidity levels where a Grey comes from naturally. Sounds like you did a great job in figuring out what to do for Max.Stephaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04549433838794370673noreply@blogger.com
